Prescription Errors

Prescription Errors

Research by Dean, Barber and Schachter (2000) published in Quality in Healthcare Care outlined cases which could be considered prescribing errors in the UK, as voted on by a panel of healthcare professionals including physicians, pharmacists, surgeons and risk managers.

Amongst the scenarios which were considered prescribing errors were:

Errors in decision making: These were case in which the prescription was deemed 'inappropriate for the patient concerned'. For example, not taking into account a potentially significant drug interaction or continuing a drug in the event of a clinically significant reaction, amongst other scenarios.

Errors in prescription writing: These scenarios were categorised as being due to a 'failure to communicate essential information'. Such as, writing illegibly or writing an ambiguous medication order, or continuing a GP's prescribing error on a patient's admission to hospital.

Prescribing errors may occur due to your GP, your nurse, your doctor or another medical professional. Whoever is deemed at fault it is not you. You are entitled to the compensation you deserve, especially if the prescribing error has caused you discomfort which would have been avoided if the prescription had been correct.
