Episiotomy Injuries
Episiotomy Injuries and Pain
An episitomy is a surgical intervention in the perenium made during child birth to facilitate with the delivery of the baby. Unfortunately, on occasions the cut can be made negligently and lead to ongoing pain and suffering. If you have had problems with Episiotomy scars or stitches, you may be entitled to compensation and private medical treatment to help you to recover.
Types of Injury
There are two different types of Episiotomy which are used - a midline or a mediolateral. A midline Episiotomy is a surgical cut which goes straight down in the direction of the woman's anus. It has been argued that a midline Episiotomy increases the risk of obtaining a third or fourth degree tear. However, there is only a possibility of this occurring if tearing continues and extends beyond the cut that has been made. A mediolateral Episiotomy is a surgical cut made at a 45 degree angle. The angle of the cut is located this way so if a tear extends from the cut it will not extend into the anus, but past it.
Informed consent must be obtained in the prenatal stage as valid informed consent cannot be received from the mother at the time the episiotomy is required as the baby's head will be crowning.
In addition to an episiotomy causing ongoing pain you might also experience pain from other perenial injuries, including vaginal tears. Our solicitors can help you with all types of injuries to the mother during child birth.
