Skin Cancer Misdiagnosis
What Is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and it is most common in white skin. The rates of skin cancer have dramatically risen in the UK in last 25 years, due to the development of a culture in which being tanned equals being fashionable and healthy. However, a tan is in fact a sign of skin damage and our nation of sun worshippers are at risk of cancer.
Forms Of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer comes in 2 forms:
Melanoma Skin Cancer
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and is the most prominently known cancer in the public eye. This form of skin cancer is the one which calls you to keep an eye on your moles. Malignant melanoma spreads through the body rapidly via the bloodstream. Changes in moles should be taken seriously and you should visit a doctor immediately should your moles change in colour, size, shape or become inflamed, itchy or bleed.
Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
Non-melanoma skin cancers affect cells within the top layer of the skin. Basal Cell Carcinoma affects all regions of skin which have been exposed to the sun. It presents itself as a small painless brown/pink lump. This lump will grow and develop a depression in the centre. This lump can usually be cut out under general anaesthetic. Squamous Cell Carcinoma affects a different cell in the top layer of skin and most often it will occur on the face. The cancer will look like a reddish brown area of thickened skin. As with Basal Cell Carcinoma, it will be painless. Both of these non-melanoma skin cancers rarely spread and are slow growing.
Be vigilant and if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of skin cancer you should seek medical advice immediately.
