Placental Abruption Claims

Placental Abruption can cause complications for 40-50% of babies who survive it.

Have you or your baby suffered due to a placental abruption?

Placental abruption is a complication in pregnancy due to the placenta becoming detached from the uterus wall before the baby is delivered. The condition can lead to complications for both mother and child, with it being vital that both are carefully monitored to minimise unnecessary risks to health. Fetal distress occurs early on in the condition in around half of the cases and of the children who survive 40-50% experience complications. These complications can range from mild to severe.

This is a serious condition and if it is not diagnosed rapidly enough there is the possibility of death for mother or child. In most instances the mother will survive, however if the placental abruption is acute it is vital that an emergency delivery is performed as rapidly as possible, if the baby is developed enough. Generally, an IV drip will be administered and the mother will be closely monitored until a vaginal delivery is possible. Often an emergency caesarean section will be required and sometimes a hysterectomy may be necessary. However, if the placental abruption is small the mother may be able to be released from hospital if the condition is not worsening.

Complications for mother and child include excessive blood loss, shock, no labour and closed cervix which can all lead to potential death due to shock.

Do you feel you, your baby or perhaps your partner have been subject to unnecessary trauma due to a placental abruption? If it was the case that your placental abruption was not diagnosed rapidly enough, or appropriate treatment was not given it may be that you have license to make a medical negligence claim. If you feel that you or your family have experienced undue trauma due to a medical professional's failure to diagnose a placental abruption, or a failure to treat the condition properly, we can help.
