Negligent Nose Jobs

Cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly commonplace in the UK. People who are desperately unhappy with their appearance are turning to plastic surgeons for help, taking the chance to alter their body for the better.

Nose jobs - known medically as a ‘rhinoplasty’ - are one of the most regularly performed procedures. In 2011 alone, 4,518 people in the UK underwent a rhinoplasty, a figure which has steadily increased over the years.

The operation allows the nose to be reshaped depending upon the patient’s requirements. He or she may dislike the size of their nose, the shape of the tip, nostril or bridge, and may even have breathing difficulties that need to be rectified.

Whatever the desired outcome, rhinoplasty patients will undoubtedly be extremely excited at the prospect of having a new nose. Indeed, the majority report feeling very self-conscious about their nose, particularly as it is a central feature of the face. A nose job is therefore a way to resolve these issues, helping to bolster their confidence and their happiness.

However, anyone who is thinking about having a nose job must be warned of the risks - because like all operations, a rhinoplasty can result in certain complications. These include a bad reaction to the general anaesthetic, infection, heavy bleeding and difficulty breathing through the nose. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), around 10% of patients will not “look right” after the swelling has abated, meaning a second operation must be performed.

Of course, if a patient does suffer any of these complications it will be extremely disappointing for them. But what will be all the more devastating is if a problem arises because the surgeon and his medical team did not do their job properly. It may be hard to believe that this could ever happen, especially as rhinoplasty procedures are becoming so popular. But unfortunately it does occur, and every year these are those unlucky few who suffer injury because of a negligent nose job.

If you believe you are one of these people, you need to speak to a solicitor about the treatment you received. If a legal expert suspects that your care did fall to unacceptable standards, causing you harm, you will be considered the victim of medical negligence. This may include, for example, if you have been left with excessive scarring, gross asymmetry, disfigurement or no sense of smell. You will then be able to pursue a medical negligence claim against the surgeon or organisation responsible. If your claim is successful, you will be awarded compensation for the pain and suffering you have experienced because of your botched nose job.
