What is Whiplash?

The term "whiplash" is usually used to describe an injury sustained when another car drives into the rear of your car causing your neck to be stretched much further than would normally happen. Often these days the term is used to describe any car accident where a neck injury is sustained.

How is the whiplash injury caused?

At first in a rear end shunt the body is pushed forwards and upwards by the car seat. Your head does not move immediately as it is not connected to the seat like your body is. However, after a while it is "whipped" forwards to catch up with the rest of your body, and then backwards to go back with it as the seatbelt restrains it. It is this double "whipping" of the neck that causes the neck to go far beyond its usual "comfort zone" of movements.

Can a whiplash injury be sustained at low speeds?

Yes. This is quite common. Often the extent of the injury is not linked to the speed of the vehicle and the injury at low speed will vary from person to person.

When is the whiplash neck pain likely to start?

This varies but can start within the hour after the accident, or sometimes not until you wake up the next day.
