Cauda Equina syndrome is a condition caused when a prolapsed disc in the spine presses on the nerves located at the base of the spinal column. These nerves control the movement and feeling of the legs and lower abdomen. This is potentially a very serious condition and urgent treatment is required to prevent the nerve damage from becoming permanent. Medical staff should recognise the symptoms of this condition which may include pain and numbness in the legs and back and loss of bladder control.
