What is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is defined as lung fibrosis and is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. To assess whether you have asbestosis your consultant will look at clinical features, X-ray appearances and will also analyse your history of heavy asbestos exposure which generally leads to asbestosis. The fact that it takes a long time for the symptons of asbestos to develop is evidenced in the increasing number of claims made for asbestosis. This has increased from over 700 claims in 1991 to more than 1800 in 2004. It is expected that claims will continue to increase as many victims who were heavily exposed to asbestos during the course of their employment develop the condition.
