Young Farmers Work Injuries

Companies in East Anglia are being advised to take better precautions to prevent young farmers work injuries. The call from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) comes after a Norfolk-based company was fined £25,000 plus costs after an incident in which a teenage employee suffered an electric shock at a farm near Thetford. The teenager had to have his little toe and part of another toe amputated after he came into contact with an overhead power line and now has permanent scars on his legs.

The firm was criticised for not supervising the worker properly and the HSE said that the case highlighted the need for young, inexperienced and vulnerable members of staff to be properly supervised. The case has also reinforced the HSE’s earlier warning that farming and agriculture was one of the most dangerous sectors in which to work. Although many young people working in the sector have been brought up in agricultural surroundings, the HSE is still concerned that young people have a more cavalier attitude towards safety in farming environments and may take unnecessary risks if not properly supervised or trained.

The inexperience of working with heavy machinery or at height may also constitute a significant factor in the number of serious injuries in farming environments. Often, standard safety procedures that would be rigorously enforced in any other sector can be overlooked to ‘get the job done’. This is not to say that farms are a hotbed of poor health and safety practice - farming is a profession that takes safety very seriously indeed. But putting young, inexperienced workers in close proximity with heavy machinery without proper supervision is a recipe for disaster, as the statistics show. In 2008/2009, 26 people in the UK died in agricultural accidents and1,500 people each year are seriously injured. The vast majority of these accidents could have been prevented, and there is no doubt that inexperience has a great deal to do with the unacceptable toll of deaths and injuries amongst young workers on UK farms. Farm accidents seem to be a ‘hidden’ problem and the more organisations such as the HSE can do to highlight the dangers, as well as those injured in farm accidents actively pursuing compensation for work-related injuries, the greater the chance there is of significantly reducing those numbers in years to come.
