Leading Think Tank Criticises Maternity Care.
A report from one of Britain's leading health think tanks has indicated that mothers and babies could be facing unnecessary risks.
The independent inquiry into the safety of maternity services in England was commissioned by the King's Fund concluded that, while the majority of births in England are safe, some births are less safe than they should be.
Around 63,000 maternity-related incidents were reported in a yearlong period from 2006 to 2007. 66% caused no harm to mothers and babies but around 21% caused low harm and 1.5% caused severe harm.
The report highlighted various factors contributing to maternity safety, including changing demands such as a rise in the number of older mothers, more obese women and more fertility treatment leading to more multiple births. However, the inquiry also targeted several areas of concern within healthcare provision and made a number of recommendations.
One key finding was the strong link between the effectiveness of teamwork and the level of safety - essentially bad teamwork can jeopardise safety. Staffing, training and guidance on safe practice were also highlighted as key areas where safety can be improved, while the role of trust boards and current national structures for safety also came in for criticism.
