How To Reduce Accidents At Work

Helping Businesses Stay Healthy - A New Initiative to Reduce Accidents at Work

Guidelines laid down by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) state that, “As an employer you have a legal responsibility to protect the health and safety of your staff and other people - such as customers and members of the public - who may be affected by their work.” In addition, workers have responsibilities and obligations to reasonably ensure their own safety and those of their colleagues and to report any deviations from the HSE’s legislation. In order to ensure that both employers and employees understand and are aware of their obligations, the HSE has joined forces with a number of organisations to help local businesses benefit from a new and innovative support project.

The HSE has targeted the South East as the first region to benefit from the new Estates Excellence programme. Working with organisations such as Slough Borough Council, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the Federation of Small Businesses and small business groups, it is designed to offer advice to employers and employees of how to ‘Get It Right’, ‘Get Efficient’ and ‘Get Fit For Work’. As part of the scheme, businesses will be given the opportunity to take part in free workshops and training, with advice and guidance specifically targeted to the needs of a business. In addition, they will have access to health testing for noise, vibration, dermatitis and lung function.

There are further incentives for businesses to take part in the scheme. Those that can demonstrate their commitment to Health and Safety by attending the programme will receive a Participation Award and be entered into an open register of Estates Excellence businesses.

The fundamental aim of the scheme is to work with landlords and business owners to improve health and safety. The workshops will enable participants to assess their health and safety needs and, in turn prioritise their actions. By placing business owners in touch with each other as part of an online community, it is hoped that participants will continue to view health and safety as a key issue. By maintaining good practice in health and safety, businesses can boost productivity and profits, retain staff and reduce money lost through absences and sick leave. According to figures released by the HSE, the cost of accidents and malpractice in the South East alone costs the region’s employers around £1,730million per year. Many of these costs are uninsurable and include the loss of product and raw materials, the loss of contracts and the payment of legal costs and compensation.

Employers who ignore their obligations towards their employees run the risk of facing personal injury claims on a daily basis. If an employee is injured and the employer is found to have ignored health and safety regulations, it can cost them more than just the price of compensation. There may well be HSE fines to consider on top of the cost of righting the situation that initially caused the injury. While many see the HSE as merely interfering, many workers owe their lives to the legislation they have set down for both them and their employers.
