Young Driver Whiplash Claims
How can the number of whiplash claims in young drivers be cut?
According to Department for Transport statistics, young drivers (aged 17-24) were involved in 26% of all UK road traffic accidents in 2009. This substantial statistic is made all the more significant when considering that young drivers only account for 12% of licence holders.
Tragically, young drivers also accounted for almost a quarter (6,329) of those killed or seriously injured on the UK’s roads in the same year. In terms of lesser injuries, such as whiplash, those aged 17-24 account for a staggering 30% of all ‘slight injuries’.
Though the number of young people involved in car accidents has fallen dramatically over the past two decades, these figures show there is still much to be done to reduce the number of younger drivers being injured, or causing others to be injured.
Are Younger Drivers Partly Responsible For Rising Premiums?
Due to the number of young drivers involved in accidents, they are also inevitably responsible for a high proportion of the spiralling number of whiplash claims being made in the UK. These claims and others have caused insurance premiums to rocket in the past couple of years, not least for younger drivers, many of whom are now finding insurance policies almost impossible to afford.
So, what can be done to reverse this trend? While there have been many advances in vehicle safety in the past decade and more are constantly being developed, a car is only ever as safe as its driver. In addition to this, many young drivers are driving older vehicles that are more affordable, and so do not gain the benefits of these newer safety features.
Many people are of the opinion that the only way to reduce the number of young people making whiplash claims and causing more serious accidents is to educate them better.
Reducing Whiplash Claims Through Better Driving Education
One possible means of education for younger drivers is the Driving Standard Agency’s Pass Plus course. This covers many elements of driving that young people are likely to experience in their first few years of driving, but are not necessarily covered in practical driving lessons or tests. This includes driving through cities, along motorways and dual carriageways, at night and in all weather conditions.
This would certainly help to reduce the number of accidents that occur as a result of situations and conditions in which the young driver is inexperienced. By giving them additional confidence in city and town driving techniques, it might also reduce the possibility of them being involved in a low-speed impact that results in a whiplash claim. As an incentive for taking the optional course, many insurers offer discounts on their premiums to drivers with the Pass Plus qualification.
But often the underlying cause of car accidents involving young people is not necessarily a lack of knowledge about driving techniques, but instead a predisposition for risk-taking behaviour and in some cases arrogance - what some might call ‘youthful exuberance’. In order to encourage more responsible driving behaviour amongst young people, it might help to not only educate them further on the consequences of their actions on the road, but also on the effects that their driving may have on their insurance premiums.
