Whiplash - The Long Term Consequences
Whiplash is an injury that is common in people involved in car accidents. It is most likely to occur in car accidents where the car is hit from behind in a rear end collision. The sudden impact literally causes the head to “whip” back - hence the name. It is common in such injuries for the soft tissue in the neck to be stretched and strained. In most cases the pain subsides in a few days or weeks. Occasionally, long-term damage is caused and the pain remains for years or in the worst cases can be permanent. Unfortunately long term damage from whiplash brings a whole host of other physical and mental problems.
Long term affects of whiplash are often known collectively as ‘whiplash syndrome’. In a recent study it has been suggested that one third of people suffering from whiplash will go on to have long term problems. People suffering from whiplash syndrome will often have continual or reoccurring headaches and neck pain. In some cases there is even loss of mobility in the neck. Whiplash syndrome can also cause a tingling sensation in the arms and hands. There can also be lumbar pains, or pains in the lower back; sometimes the lower back will even twitch and spasm.
As well as the physical problems, certain mental problems can also occur. Many people who suffer from whiplash syndrome find themselves constantly fatigued and generally lacking energy and motivation. Ironically this will be accompanied by the inability to sleep or sleep disturbances and nightmares. These are a form of post traumatic stress brought on by the whiplash pains. Following the lack of energy there can also be a loss in libido or sex drive.
If you are in an accident and suffer from whiplash it is wise to make a whiplash claim for compensation and for the costs of medical treatment. There are plenty of specialist solicitors who can help with advice and representation. It is vital to approach a specialist as they will be aware of previous cases, the legal issues involved and will have experience in the field. If you are in an accident you may be approached by the other driver's insurance company to settle the claim without a solicitor. It is unwise to follow such a course of action as the other driver's insurance company will not have your best interests at heart.
The amount that you receive in compensation from your whiplash claim depends on the extent of your injuries. If you suffer from whiplash syndrome and long term issues you will obviously be entitled to a larger compensation amount. For example if you recover from your injuries within a year you will entitled to between £750 and £2,500. However if you suffer long term effects then the amount can range from £7,750 to £13,750. On top of these figures you will also be able to claim for other amounts to cover related costs. These costs include money that you may lose from not being able to work, money for a new vehicle, medical expenses and the costs of medication.
