Whiplash And Pysiological Problems
Can whiplash trigger more serious physiological problems?
Most people think that whiplash is a relatively minor injury. Most often the result of rear end car collisions or sporting accidents, whiplash affects the neck, shoulders and soft tissue surrounding the upper spine and is usually a short-term problem. However, several recent cases are causing scientists and medical experts to take another look at whiplash and the possibility that it could act as a trigger for other, more serious conditions.
The most recent case concerns a physiotherapist who suffered for several years from a range of symptoms that may have been caused by a cancer that eventually killed her. However, her family stated that she had been fit and healthy up until 2000, when she suffered whiplash in a car accident. After the accident the woman started experiencing a range of various symptoms such as bright lights in her vision, swelling, high temperature and an uncontrollable flickering of the eyelids. Her family said that she had none of these symptoms until after the accident. The 49 year-old woman was eventually admitted to hospital with abdominal pains, but it wasn’t until after her death that ovarian cancer was diagnosed.
While the inquest found conclusively that the cancer had caused her death, the family still maintains that the car accident and subsequent whiplash in 2000 led to her illness.
No Conclusive Link
This case does not conclusively prove any link between whiplash and cancer, but it has raised questions as to whether this common injury could trigger off more serious conditions. Whiplash has always been considered to be a muscular injury, as the most common symptoms associated with it are muscular pain, difficulty in movement and tension. However, the injury is also associated with dizziness, blurred vision and other neurological symptoms and it is this aspect that medical experts believe requires more research.
The vast majority of whiplash victims recover fully from their injuries in a relatively short time and with no long-term after effects. But research in 2009 suggested that the effects of whiplash could return if the sufferer has a similar incident, indicating that whiplash injuries do have a more long-term prognosis. This is of particular interest to solicitors dealing with the 1,200 whiplash claims lodged in the UK every day, as until now whiplash compensation claims have been relatively small payouts for a short-term injury. However, as more study is carried out into whiplash, it seems that this so-called ‘simple’ injury may be a little more complex than first assumed.
Check With The Experts
The advice from experts is to have any injury checked out by a medical professional as soon as the whiplash symptoms are obvious. In whiplash cases, this is usually within 24-48 hours of the initial incident. For most people, whiplash injuries last a couple of weeks at most, but for others the effects may be more prolonged.
Anyone suffering whiplash injuries as a result of an accident that wasn’t their fault is advised to talk to a solicitor. Not only will they be able to pursue a compensation claim for the victim, but they also have access to medical expertise and professionals who specialise in treating whiplash injuries. These experts may be able to pick up any indications that deeper, more serious damage has been inflicted on the surrounding tissue and skeleton. As research continues, it is hoped that treatment for whiplash will improve and become more effective, both in the immediate period after an accident and in the long term too.
