The Long Road to Recovery; Whiplash and Physiotherapy

Unless you have suffered from whiplash, you are probably unaware of its exact nature and how its treatment is implemented. Because it is a condition that has no external symptoms other than those complained of by the sufferer, whiplash is often derided as a figment of the imagination. In addition, the increase in the number of fraudulent whiplash claims has brought the condition into the spotlight, accompanied by a lot of negative press. For genuine sufferers of the painful and often debilitating injury, these attitudes can only serve to increase the number of people who suffer in silence.

What causes whiplash?

Whiplash is usually caused by an accident in which the driver’s car has been hit from the rear. As a result of the impact, the driver’s head snaps forward and then back. This action stretches the spine and surrounding ligaments in opposing directions and at great speed. The areas most affected by this action are the neck and the middle of the back. The impact does not have to occur at excessive speed in order to cause whiplash. There have been many incidents recorded at speeds of less than15 miles per hour that have resulted in a whiplash injury.

Symptoms of whiplash may manifest themselves almost immediately or over a period of time, with cases having been reported up to six months after the actual event. In most cases, it seems that the sooner the symptoms manifest, the greater the likelihood that the damage is of a serious nature. Symptoms can include neck swelling, neck pain, muscle spasms, limited mobility of the head, headaches, dizzy spells and pain shooting from the neck into the shoulders or arms. In serious cases sufferers can lose arm and leg functions for a period of time.

Talk to your GP

In deciding to make a personal injury claim for whiplash, potential claimants are advised to consult their GP as soon as possible. If the claimant is showing normal levels of consciousness and alertness and is displaying no other signs of injury, a GP can usually make a diagnosis without the use of X-Rays. However, if it is deemed necessary, X-Rays can be taken and there may be a need for a MRI scan to assess any further damage. Once the diagnosis has been made, the GP will usually record it on the claimant’s medical notes. These notes may be used at a later date in pursuing a personal injury claim.

The treatment of whiplash may involve the prescription of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition and depending on the severity of the injury, the doctor may prescribe a course of physiotherapy exercises to restore flexibility to affected areas. This is often prescribed in accordance with heat treatment to loosen the muscles that may have constricted as a result of the impact. Other treatments may include massage, bed rest and immobilisation of the neck (although this is rarely advised now). If the injury is mild, treatment may only be necessary for a few weeks. More serious whiplash injury can require months of specialist treatment before a sufferer is restored to full mobility.
