Scans For Whiplash Injuries
Traditional MRI scans don’t pick up whiplash injuries
The symptoms of whiplash are often debatable, but always subjective. However, new technology being considered for use in the UK may help to sort false whiplash claims from genuine ones. Can scans now be used to accurately detect whiplash injuries this is the question being posed?
Whiplash is a condition most commonly caused by a sudden rear impact during a road traffic accident. The force of the impact sends the head forward and then back, causing the spine and soft tissues surrounding it to mimic the action of a whip. Because the muscles and vertebrae are forced into unnatural positions and at speeds that they were not designed for, they are often stretched beyond their normal capacity. As a result, many victims of rear impact car collisions often complain of symptoms such as neck and shoulder pain, tingling in the extremities, headaches, loss of mobility of the arms and neck and dizziness. Whiplash symptoms can occur from between a number of hours to a number of weeks after the impact and their severity can vary tremendously.
Because there tend to be no physical signs of whiplash, doctors and medical staff have to rely on the victim’s description of their symptoms. As a result, whiplash injuries tend to be one of the most commonly faked or exaggerated personal injuries. To further compound the problem of false insurance claims, equipment used to assess spinal damage such as MRI scans, do not register the damage that would help to make a conclusive diagnosis.
However, a new type of MRI scanner created in the United States and currently on trial at one London hospital, seems to have made a breakthrough where whiplash is concerned.
Traditionally, MRI scanners work by using magnetic fields and radio waves to provide the radiographer with a description of the tissues that are being scanned. Usually patients are lying down whilst the scan is being performed. However, the Fonar Upright Multi-Position MRI uses new technology to scan patients while they are upright. According to the results of a study carried out in July, the Fonar MRI was able to detect the anatomic origins of whiplash symptoms 2.5 times more successfully than when a traditional, recumbent MRI was used.
For victims of rear impacts, this means that for the first time the anatomy responsible for whiplash symptoms can be visualised and identified. In turn, this means that treatments can be devised that result in more effective relief in a shorter period of time. Conventional whiplash treatment relies on painkillers and a series of physiotherapy sessions based on the patient’s description of their symptoms. It also means that genuine whiplash claims can be processed more easily.
Because of the upsurge in fraudulent whiplash injury claims, lawyers tend to give all whiplash claims extra scrutiny. While this practice may ultimately help to save the tax-payer money and keep the cost of car insurance premiums down, it also can mean that genuine claims take longer to be processed, which can cause extended suffering and distress to those who are genuinely suffering from symptoms of whiplash.
The Fonar MRI scanner is currently being tested in a London hospital. If medical professionals recognise it as a useful tool, it could help to detect whiplash injuries and prove that genuine whiplash is more than just a pain in the neck.
