One in Four Crashes are Rear Impact Collisions
The results of a report carried out by ‘Which?’ website have revealed that 25% of all road traffic accidents involve rear impact collisions. According to the study, this is an increase of 9% when compared to the previous year. The knock-on effect for the motorist is an increase in the cost of insurance policies - but what accounts for this apparent incline in the number of rear end shunts?
A pain in the rear
According to the results published in ‘Which?’ there were 405,000 rear impact collisions in 2010. As a result, an estimated £1.9billion was paid out in compensation for whiplash claims.
A reasonable argument and one of the findings of the study was that congestion has a lot to answer for. With over 33million cars on British roads, traffic is moving slower than ever before. It has been found that slow moving traffic can lead drivers to lose concentration and drive too close to the car in front. In addition, the practice of ‘tailgating’ may hold some responsibility, despite its having been made illegal.
However, despite the arguments for an over-subscribed traffic network, the research found another factor in the equation.
A real problem?
Whiplash is an injury that is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Caused by a rear impact collision, it takes its name from the whipping action of the spine as the result of such an incident. As the car is hit, the head of the passenger or driver is flicked forward at tremendous speed, extending the neck, spine and surrounding soft tissues beyond their usual range of motion. In the next stage of whiplash, the head is thrown back and, if the headrest is not positioned correctly, hyperextension of the neck can also happen here. The result is that the soft tissues are stretched, strained and can also be torn. Symptoms of this condition range from a stiff neck to more debilitating effects, such as loss of mobility and depression.
However, the symptoms of whiplash are rarely supported by physical evidence, leaving medical professionals to rely heavily on the testimonials of the victims. Consequently, whiplash is the most commonly faked or exaggerated form of personal injury claim. Over the last few years, there have been numerous cases of individuals who have launched fraudulent whiplash claims in the hope of making some ‘easy money’. However, perhaps more worryingly, there has been a rise in the number of ‘cash for crash’ crimes. These crimes involve groups who will slam on their brakes in front of an innocent motorist to cause a rear impact collision, with the sole purpose of launching fraudulent claims. In many cases, the fraudsters disconnect their brake lights, so that the motorist behind has no way of anticipating the sudden stop.
Fraudulent whiplash claims cost the innocent motorist an extra £44 in the cost of their annual insurance premiums, to account for the £3billion per year that is paid out by insurance companies. With more and more unscrupulous motorists trying their luck with fraudulent whiplash claims, the reason for the increase in rear impact collisions is not so hard to understand.
