Pedestrian And Passenger Whiplash Injuries
New research could cut the number of whiplash injuries
New safety systems designed to minimise the number of pedestrian injuries each year could also help to cut the number of whiplash injuries suffered by passengers and drivers. Research carried out by Thatcham at Loughborough University has, for the first time, identified the most common crash situations and tested the new technology accordingly.
How whiplash happens
Whiplash is the most common injury sustained through rear impact collisions. During a collision of this sort the neck and spine undulate, imitating the action of a whip. While the weight of the torso allows it to remain relatively still, the weight of the head causes it to be thrown forward at speeds the neck and spine were not designed for, over-stretching the surrounding soft tissues. Once this phase of the impact is over, the head is then thrown back and, if the headrest is not situated correctly, further injury can be sustained. The resulting symptoms range from mild to severe, but are notoriously hard to diagnose and cost the insurance industry around £2billion per year in insurance claim payouts.
Insurers have been working closely with medical professionals and car designers to find ways to reduce the potential for whiplash, not only saving innocent motorists from inconvenience and pain, but also reducing the potential for fraudsters to penalise the innocent motorist through rising insurance premiums to cover the cost of fraudulent claims.
New Technology
While car designers have made recent leaps in using seating design to minimise the potential for whiplash injury, Thatcham’s research has focussed on braking systems. While these systems have been designed primarily to reduce the number of pedestrian injuries, the side benefit for drivers and passengers soon becomes apparent.
Autonomic Emergency Brake (AEB) systems are at the forefront of Thatcham’s recent breakthrough. AEB is a “collision avoidance system which automatically applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate collisions with obstacles in front of the vehicle, such as other vehicles or pedestrians. The systems rely on sensors at the front of the vehicle that can survey the road ahead. When the sensors detect that a crash is imminent and the driver has not reacted, the vehicle will apply the brakes to help mitigate or even avoid the crash.”
AEB systems are set to become more widespread on British vehicles over the next two decades. Based on information from the Accident Data Study, Thatcham predicts that the systems could potentially help to prevent around 2,700 pedestrian fatalities and over 160,000 whiplash injuries per year. The areas of collision in which AEB systems could prove most beneficial are pedestrian injuries and injuries sustained to passengers through minor, low-speed accidents. 75% of accidents take place at low speeds and the most prominent passenger injury is whiplash.
While this could mean great savings to the insurance industry, the better news for careful drivers is that they could feel the benefit of these savings in the form of lower insurance premiums. At a time when the cost of motoring has reached an all-time high, the attitude that ‘prevention is better than cure’ could result in reducing the potential for injury and saving both money and, more importantly, lives.
