Debilitating Whiplash Injury Claims
15 Million Drivers At Risk Of Whiplash Injury
A new report by the British Osteopathic Association has claimed that up to 15 million car drivers in the UK are at risk of suffering a whiplash injury. The report, produced for Back Care Awareness Week in October, highlighted how a bad driving position could put drivers at greater risk of suffering a debilitating whiplash injury in the event of a collision.
The report consulted nearly 1500 drivers and asked them about their driving position habits. They found that:
- One in ten drivers have their seat positioned too far back
- 50% drove with their head too far away from the headrest
- Only 6% adjust their headrest regularly and 51% admitted to never having adjusted the headrest at all
- One in seven drivers sit too close to the steering wheel
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is the name given to an injury sustained to the spine, neck and surrounding soft tissues as they are forced into a ‘whipping’ motion, usually as a result of a rear impact collision. During the impact forces act upon the spine, sending shock waves from the lower regions of the spine right up to where it meets the base of the skull. These shock waves translate into a whip-like motion, sending the head forward and then back at speeds that the body is not designed for.
In acting like a whip the spine is stretched in both directions, often far beyond its natural range. The result is that all the soft tissues surrounding the spinal column such as ligaments, tendons and muscles can suffer moderate to severe damage, depending on the severity of the impact. Although often not felt for at least 24 hours after the accident, symptoms often include back and neck pain, restricted movement and muscle spasms. Other symptoms associated with whiplash include headaches, blurred vision and dizziness.
Whiplash Injury Costing The NHS millions
Whiplash is one of the most common forms of accident compensation claims, with more than 1,200 claims registered with solicitors across the country every day. Each year, the effects of whiplash cost the NHS and insurance companies millions of pounds in payouts and treatment costs. The ambiguous nature of whiplash injuries has also spawned a more menacing roadside crime - cash for crash scams.
The irony is that effects of whiplash can be greatly reduced simply by ensuring that the headrest is adjusted correctly. Such a simple adjustment can reduce the chances of suffering whiplash in a rear end collision significantly, and it only takes a few seconds to do. Yet more than half of the UK’s drivers admit to never checking the position of their headrest before driving.
To be effective in preventing whiplash, the headrest should be level with the top of the driver’s head and the driver should be sitting in a position that puts his or her head close to the padded headrest. By adopting this driving position, the headrest is more effective in preventing the ‘whipping’ motion of the head and spine that leads to whiplash injuries. So the advice from medical professionals and car safety experts is to take a few seconds before you drive to check that your headrest is in the correct position. A few seconds could prevent several weeks of pain and disability in the event of an accident.
