Could Fitting Winter Tyres Reduce The Chances Of Whiplash Injuries?
During the winter months, snow, ice and poor visibility combine to create the perfect conditions for road traffic accidents. Even the most experienced of drivers can fall foul of the elements and consequently there is generally a marked increase in the number of whiplash claims during the colder weather.
Whiplash is typically caused by a sudden rear impact in a road traffic accident. The impact of the collision sends the head forward at speed and then back, mimicking the action of a whip. During this motion, the vertebrae and surrounding soft tissues are stretched beyond their usual range of motion and at speeds they are not designed for. The resulting injuries can manifest themselves as a variety of symptoms including headaches, torn muscles and blurred vision. It is easy to see how icy roads could lend themselves to this sort of accident. A report by the AA has revealed that rear impact collisions increase by 267% during colder weather.
Time to invest in a set of winter tyres?
Winter tyres are a legal requirement in most of northern Europe, although that is not the case in this country. However, with winters becoming apparently more severe and the number of whiplash accidents increasing, many are starting consider the benefits of investing in a set.
The primary cause of rear impact collisions in the winter months is skidding or sliding into a vehicle in front. Part of the problem with regular tyres is their composition. The majority are made from synthetic rubber which hardens in temperatures below 7 degrees C, offering less traction. Cold weather tyres are designed with a larger percentage of natural rubber and silica in the compound that doesn't harden up as much as synthetic rubber in cold conditions. In addition, winter tyres have a deeper tread than the 1.6mm required for traditional tyres, giving greater stopping power. A further factor is that modern cars have gained a little weight - a MK5 Golf is almost twice the weight of a MK1 Golf. With all that extra weight comes added inertia when trying to change directions or slow down, which gives the tyres much more work to do. To compound the problem many more cars are coming with overly wide sports tyres that have even less chance of slowing the big heavy car.
Testing winter tyres
Tirerack.com has conducted a series of tests on the benefits of winter tyres versus the performance of high performance summer tyres under cold weather conditions. In the tests, both vehicles were stopped at a speed of 10mph. The winter tyres had a stopping distance of 6.4 metres, whilst the summer tyres needed 14 metres to bring the car to a halt. These figures bear greater consideration when it is taken into account that most accidents occur on roads where the speed limit is 30mph.
Many motorists argue that buying winter tyres is not cost effective. However, although there is a small outlay for the rims and the tyres themselves, drivers will be extending the lifespan of their normal road tyres. In addition, the cost of a car accident extends well beyond the symptoms of whiplash. Not only is there the potential for loss of earnings, but an accident also pushes up the cost of a motorist’s insurance premiums.
So perhaps it is time for the British motorist to consider investing in a set of winter tyres for the colder months. With the possibility of more regular cold snaps during the winter months, investing in a set of winter tyres could actually prove to be both cost effective in the long run. It could also reduce the chances of suffering a debilitating injury that could cost more than just a couple of days off work.
