Are Cash For Crash Accidents Driving Up The Cost Of Car Insurance?
A report by the Automobile Association has revealed that car insurance premiums are rising faster than at any time since 1994. With the jaws of the recession still holding many in their grip, are some drivers helping to force the cost of motoring up for the rest of us?
‘Crash for cash’ is a term that many drivers will not be familiar with - and yet it is one of the main factors responsible for the continued hike in car insurance premiums. Cash for crash is a relatively new phenomenon, typically run by gangs of criminals looking to exploit the insurance laws. Initially, crash for cash began as a money making scheme operated by fraudsters. Upon having selected a target, usually single mothers or elderly drivers, they force innocent motorists to crash into the back of them, braking suddenly on clear roads or at roundabouts. This is usually done using the handbrake or by disconnecting brake lights so that the car behind receives no warning that they are about to brake. Once the crash has taken place, the scammers then choose to either demand money on the spot for damage to the car, fake whiplash and put in a fraudulent personal injury claim or claim for no-existent damages to their vehicle. According to the AA, the average claim of this sort is for around £17,000 and may include demands for the payment of storage costs and recovery fees.
Not just the actions of gangs
However, crash for crash fraud has become more widespread and seems not to be the sole propriety of criminal gangs. Simon Douglas, the director of AA Insurance, believes that this form of fraud is becoming more commonplace. He says: “There's evidence suggesting that thousands of people are attempting this themselves - perhaps to get someone else to pay for past damage and to make a claim for non-existent whiplash injury. This is extremely rash and puts peoples' lives at risk.” In addition, many motorists are exploiting the benefits of car insurance comparison websites, by giving false driving histories in order to drive the cost of their premiums as low as possible. However, the knock-on effect is that the more fraud that is committed, the greater the increase in premiums for legitimate motorists.
Costing millions every year
The Insurance Fraud Bureau estimates that crash for cash scams alone cost insurance companies around £350 million in 2009, adding £44 to the cost of every insurance premium, regardless of driving or claim history. Another repercussion for the innocent motorist is that, insurance companies will use these rare fraudulent claims as an excuse to challenge genuine claims made by innocent accident victims and there is evidence that this is already happening. People making claims for whiplash compensation are often challenged to ridiculous degrees by the insurance industry to prove their claim and injury. Fortunately, with expert solicitors from 1stClaims on your side these challenges can soon be removed.
Research by online comparison site, moneysupermarket.com, has unearthed another worrying statistic. According to their report, 15% of motorists under the age of 35 would consider staging an accident in order to make a fraudulent compensation claim - with one in twenty already having done so. While most of us are being careful with our money, those looking to make a ‘quick buck’ are forcing us to pay for their actions - whether we like it or not. However, they will more likely than not be caught and fined and/or put in prison for their actions, leaving the honest motorist nothing to worry about.
