Crash Claims Scams Drop
The Insurance Fraud Bureau has reported that the amount of "cash for crash" claims scams has started to fall following the arrest last year of three people who are alleged to be key members of an organised crime network.
The three suspects were arrested as part Operation Pelican, an ongoing investigation into insurance fraud conducted by the Insurance Fraud Bureau in conjunction with West Yorkshire Police. It is claimed that the arrest of the suspects could throw a spanner in the work, as it were, of the crime syndicate and thus lead to a decrease in the number of fraudulent claims.
During the last ten months the IFB have been working with West Yorkshire Police investigating allegedly fraudulent vehicle accident claims said to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. So far Operation Pelican has seen the arrest of 22 people.
Three people, thought to be instrumental in the claims, have been charged including a 37 year old man, a 36 year old woman and a 57 year old vehicle examiner and are due to appear in court on March 13th.
Unfortunately law-abiding motor insurance policy holders can be seriously affected by the kind of large scale fraud that is being investigated here, increasing the average premium by around 5%.
