Can Whiplash Cause Brain Damage?

Many of the symptoms of whiplash are well documented. However, new research suggests that there are much more serious possibilities where this injury is concerned.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is the name given to an injury sustained from the spine and surrounding soft tissues being forced into a ‘whipping’ motion. The most common cause of whiplash is a rear impact, usually as the result of a car accident. During the impact forces act upon the spine, sending waves of shock from the lower regions of the spine right up to where it meets the base of the skull. These shock waves translate into a whip-like motion, sending the spine forward and then back at speeds that the body is not designed for.

In acting like a whip the spine is stretched in both directions, often far beyond its natural range. The result is that all the soft tissues surrounding the spinal column, such as ligaments, tendons and muscles can extend to a point where damage is caused. Symptoms often include back and neck pain, restricted movement and muscle spasms. However, other symptoms associated with whiplash such as headaches, blurred vision and dizziness have prompted research into other, more devastating possibilities.

More Than Just A Stiff Neck

A recent edition of the medical journal, Brain Injury, has revealed that research is pointing to the probability that whiplash can cause anatomical changes within the body that can cause brain damage. As part of the research, the MRI scans of 1,200 whiplash victims were studied. Of this number, 23% were found to have suffered a brain injury of some form - most significant of which was the injury known as Chiari Malformation.

Chiari Malformations are usually caused by improper foetal development, exposure to harmful substances and certain infections. In an unaffected brain, the lower parts of the cerebellum sit in an indented space at the lower rear of the skull, above a funnel-like opening to the spinal column known as the foramen magnum. In affected brains, these lower parts sit below the foramen magnum, effectively being situated outside the protective casing of the skull. Research has found that in cases of whiplash, spinal fluid can be excessively drained from the spine and causing the condition. Alternatively, the force of the impact and the whipping motion of the spine can be so vigorous as to actually force those lower parts of the brain into the foramen magnum.

The symptoms of Chiari Malformations can include neck pain, dizziness, vision problems, difficulty in swallowing, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, vomiting, depression, headaches and impairment of hand co-ordination and other fine motor skills. Many of these symptoms, previously attributed to rudimentary whiplash, are now considered to be warning signs of brain injury. While pain management is available to control discomfort, the only real solution to preventing further neural damage is surgery. More than one operation is usually required.

While this may present alarming news for motorists, it also offers some comfort for the genuine sufferers of whiplash. Whiplash is one of the most commonly faked or exaggerated injuries in the insurance industry. As technology advances and is able to identify conditions such as Chiari Malformations, it is becoming easier to discern genuine cases. As a result, whiplash sufferers launching personal injury claims should soon start to see their claims being concluded far quicker than in recent years.
