Revolutionary New Surgical Dressings Could Prevent MRSA
Researchers at Strathclyde University have created new virus-laced dressings and stitches that could help stop the spread of MRSA in operating theatres and in hospital wards.
Since the rise of antibiotic resistant "superbugs" such as MRSA, scientists have been looking at different ways of tackling these highly infectious bacteria. Researchers at the University have been studying bacteriophages - viruses that attack bacteria - a treatment used in the past but which, since the prevalent use of antibiotics to treat infection, had largely been ignored for every day medical use.
The virus-impregnated sutures were tested in three Scottish hospitals with a highly encouraging success rate. The same research team have also created a tool for detecting the MRSA bug that would allow more effective screening of patients before surgery, as well as identification of contaminated areas within the theatre or hospital in general. If successful this could radically reduce the amount of people suffering from MRSA and claiming compensation for the hospital superbug.
