Medical Negligence Hospital Superbugs

New technology to beat superbugs.

A hospital that is at the forefront in the fight against superbugs has taken delivery of specialist equipment that it hopes will reduce incidences of infection even further. Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has always placed a high emphasis in combating superbugs such as MRSA and C. difficile is now installing state of the art equipment at Calderdale Hospital. The hospital is one of seven ‘showcase’ establishments in the country and the infection control team has been asked to give their views on the latest technology developed to tackle MRSA and other infections.

The hospital has seen falling annual rates of both MRSA and C. difficle, with cases of MRSA down more than 50% last year and a reduction of C. difficle cases as well. The new equipment has been designed specifically to reduce patient’s exposure to the superbugs and if successful it will go into production to be used throughout the NHS nationally. The new equipment includes chairs, commodes, bedside storage units and mattresses as well as medical equipment such as cannulae and blood pressure cuffs.

The newly designed equipment could help in the NHS’s ongoing battle against the spread of superbugs, making equipment easier to clean and reducing the risk of infection amongst vulnerable patients. The domination of superbugs in headlines is a constant concern for the NHS and anything that can help to beat the bugs is to be welcomed.

Calderdale has focused on combating MRSA and C. difficile and although their figures for infection have reduced, the hospital is committed to continuing the fight, saying that one case is one too many. It is this commitment to a continued programme of defence against the superbugs that has singled out the hospital as an example to the rest of the NHS. Standard procedures at the hospital include the rigorous use of anti-bacterial hand gels, well placed and clear information to both patients and visitors about the importance of hand hygiene, rapid response cleaning teams and specially trained infection control ‘link’ nurses controlling the fight against superbugs in all areas. All of the measures adopted by the hospital are being watched very closely by other trusts and it is possible that the plan of action adopted by Calderdale may well be rolled out across other trusts throughout the country.

The main concern in the ongoing fight against superbugs is that once cases start to reduce, standards may slip allowing the bugs to re-emerge. Calderdale has shown that a concerted effort by everyone can help to stop this from happening and with the introduction of the new equipment they see the eradication of the bugs as one step closer. This is why the trust has decided to ‘road test’ the equipment at the hospital, as they regard Calderdale as having a unique insight into the best methods of beating MRSA and C. difficile. The trial of the new equipment will show if it is effective in a real life situation and all parties will be eager for the opinions of the staff. It will also be interesting to see if there is any further reduction in the number of MRSA and C. difficile cases after the introduction of the new equipment.

The legal profession is also watching the situation with interest, as they feel that the number of medical negligence cases brought against trusts as a result of superbug infections could be greatly reduced if the correct procedures and measures to combat the bugs are introduced across the NHS. By raising the levels of care on wards through the introduction of easy to clean equipment and strict procedures in hygiene and cleaning, the fight against bugs that claim the lives of vulnerable patients may be one step nearer to succeeding.

What Our Clients Say

“My reason for contacting you was to help me find a solicitor to deal with a medical negligence claim. My previous solicitor no longer does this kind of work. I can thoroughly recommend the services that 1st Claims offer for anybody who is seeking advice regarding medical negligence. The lady who took my details was very efficient and polite. Within hours I was phoned by a solicitor who you had recommended, and matters are now proceeding in a satisfactory way.

Before contacting you, I was apprehensive that I was not going to find anybody who would be able to help me in this specialised field. The benefits of your service are the fast response, followup and a good understanding of what is required. I have complete confidence in recommending your excellent service. I am actually a retired doctor and can understand whether the people with whom I am dealing have a clear knowledge of what is required. Before I rang 1st Claims, i contacted a marketing agency and was told:-

1. That as my claim was so old, it was time barred.
2. they were unable to help as I had already been to another solicitor.

Both the reasons that I was given are completely wrong. ”

Kindest regards,
Dr E A Hopkins, LRCP MRCS
