Deep Clean Targets Missed By UK Hospitals

According to the Cleaning & Support Services Association and London Health Emergency, a leading health campaigning organisation based in the capital, several NHS hospitals will have failed to meet the March 31st deadline for a £57 million government-backed "deep clean" to tackle the so-called "superbugs" MRSA and C Difficile (also known as hospital acquired infections).

Prime minister Gordon Brown proposed the end of March deadline at last year's Labour Party conference, promising that every hospital in England would be thoroughly cleaned including hard to reach areas such as ventilation shafts and ceilings.

However, according to LHE, at least four London hospitals would not reach the deadline for deep clean. Geoff Martin, chairman and campaigns director for the organisation said, "We understand that many hospitals, because of sheer pressure on beds, have been unable to decant patent areas and deep clean them properly. Instead they have had a bit of a spring clean around the beds and that is not where we were promised."

Andrew Large, Director General of the CSSA commenting on the end of the campaign said, "Our major concern now is that there is a leadership vacuum in the NHS on cleaning issues. There are too many different NHS bodies with overlapping responsibilities, and this coupled with the autonomy enjoyed by individual NHS Trusts makes it too easy for responsibility for funding and managing cleaning to be fudged."
