Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) Cases Nearly Treble In Four Years!
Whilst many people have heard of the hospital superbug MRSA (methicillian resistant staphylococcis aureus) the relatively new superbug on the block is Clostridium Difficile (C Diff). Although less known, unfortunately it is not less of a problem. The number of reported cases has nearly trebled from 22,000 to just under 56,000 from 2002 to 2006.
C Difficile is a type of bacteria which is found in the gut in healthy adults, and even more so in children. C Diff does not cause any problems in its normal low volumes, but it does cause problems if it multiplies significantly which often happens as a result of someone taking antibiotics. This is the reason why so many C Difficile cases occur whilst people are in hospital.
Are Some People More Vulnerable?
The elderly are particularly vulnerable to C Difficile, with some 80% of cases involving 65 year olds and above.
Can C Difficile Be Prevented
As with MRSA, C Difficile can be prevented by stopping the spread of the super bug. Changing medical gloves and other medical clothing after treating infected people should be a matter of course, along with cleaning hands after treating every single patient.
Jenny Pitman, the famous racehorse trainer has recently spoken out about the cleanliness of hospitals, having lost two members of her family to hospital superbugs. Many commentators feel that not enough is done to ensure that outbreaks of C Difficile and MRSA is kept to a minimum.

What Our Clients Say
“My reason for contacting you was to help me find a solicitor to deal with a medical negligence claim. My previous solicitor no longer does this kind of work. I can thoroughly recommend the services that 1st Claims offer for anybody who is seeking advice regarding medical negligence. The lady who took my details was very efficient and polite. Within hours I was phoned by a solicitor who you had recommended, and matters are now proceeding in a satisfactory way.
Before contacting you, I was apprehensive that I was not going to find anybody who would be able to help me in this specialised field. The benefits of your service are the fast response, followup and a good understanding of what is required.
I have complete confidence in recommending your excellent service. I am actually a retired doctor and can understand whether the people with whom I am dealing have a clear knowledge of what is required. Before I rang 1st Claims, i contacted a marketing agency and was told:-
1. That as my claim was so old, it was time barred.
2. they were unable to help as I had already been to another solicitor.
Both the reasons that I was given are completely wrong.
”
Kindest regards,
Dr E A Hopkins, LRCP MRCS
