New cases of asbestos related disease deaths keep coming

A recent coroner’s inquest has investigated the life and death of a man who was diagnosed with malignant plural mesothelioma - the most deadly form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure. A ruling of death as a result of industrial disease was the coroner’s conclusion, and the ruling continues to highlight the growing number of people affected by exposure to the deadly dust.

The man had worked as a plumber throughout his career. During his apprenticeship and in the years afterwards he was exposed to asbestos on a regular basis. Asbestos was used for many years as an insulator because of its properties including resistance to heat, fire, electricity and corrosion. As a result, this remarkable but lethal substance was often used in insulating hot water pipes. It is because of this that many victims of mesothelioma come from trades such as plumbing and electrical repairs. The use of asbestos was banned in the 1970s when it was finally realised just how dangerous the mineral was, but many older properties still contain asbestos insulation around older pipe work. As older properties begin to need updating or repairs, it is a sad fact that workers are still being exposed to the dangers of asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos has been linked to a number of different diseases but mesothelioma is probably the most well known and most deadly of these. It is an unusual cancer in that it can remain latent in the body for as long as 40 years after the initial exposure point. When it finally reveals itself, it is often initially misdiagnosed as the symptoms can be mistaken for other respiratory diseases. The prognosis for mesothelioma suffers is not good, and most do not survive longer than two years after diagnosis. Currently, there is no cure for this form of cancer.

Because of the mistaken belief that asbestos was no longer a problem once it had been banned, many people have been at risk of exposure since the 1970s, and the number of asbestos-related deaths is still growing. It is predicted to peak in around 2015, which means that people are still being exposed to the risks of this deadly material even today. Debate continues as to just how great the risk is now, but although asbestos has not been used as a building material since the ‘70s, there is still plenty of it to be found in older properties. And those working on those properties are at constant risk of exposure.

Originally, it was believed that only those who were actually involved in the manufacture and processing of asbestos would be potential victims of the resulting diseases. But over the past few years it has become apparent that anyone exposed to the substance was at risk, and in particular labourers and tradesmen and women working on older properties. Those involved in campaigning for compensation for asbestos-related diseases are still faced with a daily battle to fight for the compensation that the mineral’s victims deserve, to try and make the last months of their lives as comfortable as possible. Families of victims feel angry that they have to fight so hard when the evidence is so overwhelmingly in their favour. Asbestos-related diseases are the biggest industrial killers even today, and its legacy is set to continue for years to come. Many believe that the compensation process for mesothelioma victims and their families should be made easier and quicker, but it is often difficult to apportion blame in cases that are over 40 years old. More recent cases, however, are far better documented and it is easier to trace the source of the exposure. Claims experts are hoping that the companies involved will be prepared to do the right thing and compensate the victims of what has been called ‘the silent killer’ without reservation.
