10 Year Wait For Miners' Compensation
A report issued by the Public Accounts Committee has found that former miners have had to wait more than 10 years for compensation from the government after developing pit-related illnesses. Over 100,000 men are still waiting for settlements as a result of the action, while some have died awaiting compensation for their illnesses.
After being found negligent in its treatment of former workers British Coal was obliged to create a compensation scheme to address the claims of former victims. However, forecasts from British Coal for how many people would make claims were far lower than the actual number making claims.
The report criticises ministers for underestimating the number of people making the claims noting that the expected number of claims was around 220,000 while there have in fact been over 750,000 claims for diseases including lung disease and vibration white finger.
Once settled, the total amount of compensation will be well over £4bn with an additional £2.3bn in administration fees. Solicitors handling the claims have also come in for serious criticism after it was revealed that they have earned more than £1.3bn in fees.
