Good News For Mesothelioma Sufferers
The National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) recently issued new guidelines for the use of Pemetrexed Disodium, also known as Alimta, on the NHS.
The drug, which is prescribed for malignant pleural mesothelioma, was previously only available to a small number of sufferers, is now available for patients who are able to carry out normal activity without restriction or those who are unable to undertake strenuous activity but who are otherwise able to move.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is nearly always caused by occupational exposure to asbestos. It causes a thickening of the lining of the lungs and develops into a tumour in the lining of the lungs, which can grow into the stomach.
The disease is unfortunately incurable but Alimta can help to increase life expectancy and reduce symptoms.
Until now the drug has only been available in certain areas of the UK, leading to the criticism that there is something of a postcode lottery when it comes to mesothelioma treatment.
Despite the two year wait it has taken for NICE to issue guidance, it will now be possible for sufferers to receive Alimta on the NHS throughout the UK.
