Cheltenham man killed by high levels of asbestos
A Gloucestershire Coroner has recorded a verdict of death by industrial disease on 71-year old Patrick Allen, who died last year after losing his battle with the aggressive lung cancer, mesothelioma.
The former wagon fitter had previously stated that he worked in an atmosphere that was thick with asbestos dust - the post-mortem examination found that he had been exposed to high levels of asbestos and his lungs were contaminated with around 40 times the lethal level of asbestos fibres.
Mesothelioma is nearly always caused by occupational exposure to asbestos and causes thickening of the lining of the lungs and eventually leads to tumours developing. To make a claim for mesothelioma you must issue court proceedings within 3 years of becoming aware of your condition. If you are a family member of someone who has died of mesothelioma then you have 3 years from the date of death to ensure court proceedings are issued.
Tragically, incidence of mesothelioma is set to rise over the next ten years due to the number of people who were exposed to asbestos before its lethal side effects were widely known and some asbestos campaigners are still concerned that the dangers of working with asbestos is not known widely enough.
