World Champion Rower Killed By Asbestos
Denis Melody, a marathon runner and indoor rowing champion, died after contracting mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.
Mr Melody took up indoor rowing aged 77 and took part in the British and world championships; he went on to win a gold medal in the veteran’s class at the world championships aged 80.
He was still taking part in rowing competitions until September 2006 when he started to complain of chest problems and was eventually diagnosed with mesothelioma, He died in January this year, aged 84.
It is thought that Mr Melody had encountered asbestos frequently during his career in the leather processing industry, working in old factories where machinery and boilers were commonly lagged with asbestos.
The inquest found that Mr Melody had well above the normal amount of asbestos in his lungs and that he had developed mesothelioma as a direct result. The coroner recorded a verdict of death by industrial disease.
